PS5 shifted an estimated 22.5 million units worldwide in 2023, according to a prediction by analysts Ampere. Assuming the figure is accurate, that’d represent a 65 per cent increase year-over-year, although it’s worth remembering the system was still heavily supply constrained in 2022. The same group expects declines for both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S, with the systems moving an estimated 16.4 million and 7.6 million units respectively.
Sony’s goal is to sell 25 million units in its current fiscal year, but it’s worth remembering that these estimates cover the calendar year only, and thus don’t match up. Regardless, if they’re correct, then it means the Japanese giant will still need a strong start to 2024 in order to reach its targets. Fortunately, it’s got some big games coming out, including Rise of the Ronin and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which should help it.
It's looking like this has been a breakout year for the PS5, though, with supply issues resolved and numbers increasing dramatically right around the globe. It’ll be interesting to see how it retains this momentum as we head into a New Year, and what kind of initiatives it’s got planned to continue to convert PS4 owners to its new console

How many of those 22 mil sitting in scalpers basements and closets? Ps5 is available everywhere now but i strongly believe millions of consoles are still in the hands of scalpers trying to now sell for no profit or even a loss. Ps6 needs to be 1st preorder for already existing customers. They should recieve a email to preorder 1 console. That way scalers have nothing left to scalp. Sony can check your profile if its active or has been used 2 plus yrs you automatically qualify to preorder. No limits
If I had my choice again, I'd not have bothered with the PS5 this year and stuck with just the PS4 Pro SSD as, apart from a couple of games (well, BG3 really), there's still nothing exciting coming out for the soulless console.
That’s actually a low estimate, I’d be surprised if it’s not in the 23-25m range based on current sales estimates to November. Although they don’t seem to be doing any December discounts at all, not in the UK anyway.
@sanderson72 Shhh dont say that, the fanboys will eat you alive. Soulless might be a bit harsh but not far off. The fact that 3 yrs later they’re releasing games on ps4 is what irritates me the most. Stop pumping funds into old gen games and focus on ps5. Spiderman 2 was my most anticipated and while it was good it was a super short game. Ps5 so far has been nothing but “remasters” of remasters and a few good exclusives. Same goes for xbox disappointing consoles pathetic games and lineups
@HonestTruth Your assertion that millions are in the hands of scalpers is rediculous, and not backed up by a shred of evidence.
There is no sign of these scalpers on ebay or any other market I see, so your suggesting they are just sitting in a basement somewhere?
Other than 'I feel it' where's your evidence?
@Titntin The fact that “i havent seen them anywhere” so they dont exist is whats funny. I was on marketplace 2 weeks ago and seen 5 different sellers selling regular ps5 and spiderman ps5s. Brand new description “i have 100 various brand new ps5s for sale”. You might be in the Uk which is totally different from the USA. This whole i dont see it so it cant be real is whats funny in todays society
These are some impressive figures, it's basically sold half of its current lifetime sales in around 11 months. Sony absolutely dominating yet another gen and that's even with a year of just one first party exclusive. Only going to get better and better from here on and should have a shot at beating the PS4 sales.
@HonestTruth Hey, if your in the USA then you write your own truth and all bets are off. 100 becomes milliins..
Your already down the Rabbit hole and things like facts wont make a shred of difference.
Hope you have a great xmas anyway...
A little worried about the next 12 to 18 months 1st party wise. Yh we might get a couple 1st party teasers from outta nowhere in State of Plays and a bigger Showcase in 2024 but how far off would those 1st party games be from actual release. Unless there's 1st party games we know nothing about that are almost ready for release at some point in 2nd half of 2024, would be nice but doubt it. Not massively worried to much as theres still gonna be so many great 3rd and 2nd party games to come next year doing the work like Infinite Wealth, SH2, DS2, Stellar Blade and others
Does PlayStation have a few surprises up their sleeve 1st party wise for 2024, I certainly hope so. Decent State of Plays with decent surprises and a very good Showcase for the near future with some amazing reveals
Adore my PS5 every evening but its the first time in a very long time that I'm very skeptical about PS 1st party going forward
Was worried where I'm going with this, as it appears very unrelated, then I realised State of Plays, Showcases and 1st party contribute to selling PS5s very much
Edit. Having a very boring day today
@HonestTruth I don't have a problem with games being released for the PS4 if the PS4 is capable of running them.
I have a problem with the White Goods console having a PS3 remaster, a PS4 game (R&C) and a few other releases but I think it takes the pee somewhat when Sony's biggest release for the 5 seems to be a remaster of a PS4 title that was remastered from a PS3 title. 3 years in and we should be rolling around in must-have AAA titles but we're not - thankfully 3rd party studios are tarting up PS4 games because otherwise there'd be very slim pickings.
@sanderson72 Ive been saying that for a while now but some of these fanboys cant see that. TLOU has been milked to death and ppl still keep buying it and acting excited. Sony sold them the same game 3 times and they bought it 3 times now they are selling the ps4 version of TLOU2 again for the ps5. But fanboys will never criticize sony. Its like they’ve got a foggy brain and except everything sony tosses at them. 3 yrs later we still dont have themes or folders yet we got another lous remaster
@HonestTruth "themes or folders" - looking at my PS4 now playing its Happy Holidays 2019 theme (last one Sony issued, I think? It's that or the PS2 theme) with it's lovely tune playing in the background! Relaxing....
And all my games ordered in folders how I want them to be!
I mean, it's not as if Sony hasn't got a working version of what we want the guff 5 UI to look like.....
Well done Sony on an incredibly sucessful year selling consoles!
Sony's targets for this year were always bullish. I still think they will hit them, but even if they don't it's been a phenomenal year for PS5 sales.
@Beerheadgamer82 yeah sames, GAAS mess seems to have cause some issues internally. But there are a ton of exclusive games in the first quarter alone, TLOUR, Granblue relink, pacific drive, Rise of the Ronin, Ff7 Rebirth, just to name a few. Theres a lot of cover and games to play from 2nd and third party providing cover these past 12-18 months
@HonestTruth TLoU Part 1 and Part 2 are amazing goty games, that's why they've been remastered or hybrid remade. Many crap games don't get remakes or remastered because, well they're crap. There's the successful and well received tv show for TLoU and the eventual PC versions to be considered is partly why too
@Rmg0731 yh there's a lot to look forward to still. Couple 1st party surprises would be nice too. Ragnarok Valhalla is a very welcome appreciated surprise, even though ain't got round to it yet

Shall we do some research and get an idea together? I went on Ebay to look at PS5 prices. The last 5 brand new standard PS5s were sold for £420, £430, £450, £410 & £210 (Aside: someone got a bargain on that last one... and someone lost out massively, will they fulfil it, or scarper?)
If scalpers are hoarding them there doesn't seem to be much/any profit to be made on stock PS5s even if they were bought when on sale. Yes some will occasionally sell for more, and Limited Editions (e.g. the Spider-man 2 one) will always command a premium and attract scalpers. But there doesn't seem to be much evidence of a large scalper problem in general, the market pricing just doesn't support it.
@HonestTruth
Goodness. Why would you believe scalpers are still hoarding PS5s let alone millions of them? Crazy.
Well-deserved success. I'm very pleased PlayStation is doing well.
@sanderson72 @HonestTruth Should I ask what you're opinions of Rockstar games is then? 2 new games in 10 years, 0 new IPs. Feel like i've just thrown an anger grenade into the forum....
@StonyKL Not really fussed, to be honest.
Perhaps we're judging this generation unfairly by the previous generations (which we believe in, apparently) but the PS3 and PS4 by 3 years old were swamped by good quality 1st and 3rd party exclusives and multi-plats.
Perhaps it takes a lot longer to make a PS5/XSX game these days but we don't seem to be getting the same volume of decent titles as we had before (unless it's also a PS4 title).
I'd be interested to know how many PS5s out there are basically being used as a PS4 Pro Plus(ish)?
@sanderson72 though we have some spammers (not talking about you!) posting this idea ad nauseam in the comment section of this post and others, I don’t think that many: games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Spider Man 2 and Final Fantasy XVI and expansions like Burning Shores or VR game Call of the Mountain are all ps5 only and driving sales this year…the shiny new games that are selling consoles are ps5 only and they make the console desirable.
It’s continuing early next year with Rise of the Ronin and FFVII Rebirth. Also there was a pandemic and chip shortage and development cycles are getting longer and longer so it is perfectly natural that there have been some cross gen releases from PlayStation Studios (that also provided titles like Astro, Demon’s Souls, Rift Apart and Returnal for ps5 only…)
@sanderson72
I use mine as a PS5 and occasionally as a PS4 Pro on steroids but why does it matter?
@Titntin Yeah PS5's have been easy to get for a long time now so idk why they think people are still scalping them lol
Well, that's a lot.
For context: The PS5 in a single year has sold almost as much as Xbox Series LTD.
@HonestTruth
I don’t think you understand how that works. They don’t sit on stock that they know will only depreciate in value over time, so there absolutely are not millions of PS5s in people’s bedrooms that scalpers are waiting to sell at a higher price. Watches, classics cars, wine etc they could hold on to, definitely not consumer electronics.
@ChrisDeku id kinda agree and only Returnal has really made me think the PS5 is a SUPER UPGRADE over PS4 Pro. I think the PS5 will last well into 2030 given its power and how underutilised it’s been!
@TheTony316 it’s sad Micro$oft don’t care about hardware sales and just focus on Gamepass! I never seen any XBOX adverts or posters on buses in London, it’s like it doesn’t exist.
@Luigia
Same in Germany. Haven't seen an Xbox commercial since like 2008 but Xbox has never been big to begin with here. Meanwhile, PS and Nintendo are everywhere. Store shelfs are also only a fraction of Playstation in most stores. It's pretty bad and i bet it's the same for most of Europe.
@TheTony316 considering Microsoft has soo many studios and talent, you’d think they’d want people buying their hardware to enjoy their software
@Luigia
I actually saw one Xbox ad on a bus at Lewisham Station last week. Other than that though it’s always PlayStation on the buses.
@thefourfoldroot1 wow an XBOX bus advert, not seen one of those since Cyberpunk in 2020 😀😀
It's one of those situations where success doesn't mean quality.
Yeah the PS5 is the most successful but it's not really because Sony had a great year of games releases. Almost feels like they tried to delude us on that by deluging with hardware - PSVR2 (niche, no backwards compatibility with PSVR1 even though the console can play PS4 games, go figure), those Pulse wireless earphones that fall out of your ear, PlayStation Portal (stutters and even scalpers can shift them - I've been keeping an eye on Marketplace and it's hilarious watching them all compete to price cut each other. "IN HAND" indeed, where it'll stay). And finally the Slim redesign, where they've managed to make the cheapness of the original even cheaper and the ugly design even uglier. The Disc Slim looks like it has a giant hump size tumour because you can't change the size of Blu-rays. Still, dumb people lap that s**t up because newest means best and better, right? Nope the Slim is functionally the same as the 1200 series Phat models, no die shrink on the APU, slightly more SSD space (like that matters when they all share an M.2 slot). Sony knows some of it's customers are dumb, hence seeing what they can get away with as they're lazily out in front.
What makes me laugh is a lot of the game "releases" from big studios this year and last are the same that I can literally play on my 17 year old launch Japanese PS3 because they're ported - Red Dead Redemption, The Last Of Us, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and probably others. The game industry as a whole is lazy and stagnant, in fact the whole tech sphere looks that way to me because even smartphones now all they do is make the cameras bigger and uglier too, because that's how optics work and you can't get good pictures without enough glass.
There's been a few outliers and exceptions though - Lies Of P is great but even still, it's a cross platform game that PS4 owners can get so it's not special and exclusive. And PS4 owners can put it in whatever folder they choose 😂 on the "flagship" console we don't have that "luxury".
Funny thing is, I remember when the PS3 came out it was roundly lambasted for having a poor launch lineup compared to 360 and Wii, but you look back now and there were some absolute bangers like Ridge Racer 7, Resistance: Fall Of Man, MotorStorm etc, still titles I love and in the case of RR7 play to this day. The quality bar was much higher in the mid 2000s, and although I hated the UI and noise of the PS4s (yep, I've had all of them and even the Slim makes a racket when it's been on a few hours) and find the PS5 better, I still prefer the PS3 and use it way more. Gran Turismo 6 is still my favourite because hey, look at that, even though in 2018 they switched the servers off the entire game continues to function. Oh and if you wanna skip the grind and just gift yourself lots of credits to buy halo cars, custom firmware lets you do that.
Anyway, here we are ending year 3 since release and starting year 4, Spider-Man 2 is one of the few tentpole Sony exclusives, it's all a bit disappointing. In previous generations it'll be full speed ahead now and we'd have so many exclusive bangers we would have a half dozen games in backlog for Sony first party alone. Instead it's more a limp to the barn.
Let's hope new leadership shakes it up in 2024.
