PS5 shifted an estimated 22.5 million units worldwide in 2023, according to a prediction by analysts Ampere. Assuming the figure is accurate, that’d represent a 65 per cent increase year-over-year, although it’s worth remembering the system was still heavily supply constrained in 2022. The same group expects declines for both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S, with the systems moving an estimated 16.4 million and 7.6 million units respectively.

Sony’s goal is to sell 25 million units in its current fiscal year, but it’s worth remembering that these estimates cover the calendar year only, and thus don’t match up. Regardless, if they’re correct, then it means the Japanese giant will still need a strong start to 2024 in order to reach its targets. Fortunately, it’s got some big games coming out, including Rise of the Ronin and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which should help it.

It's looking like this has been a breakout year for the PS5, though, with supply issues resolved and numbers increasing dramatically right around the globe. It’ll be interesting to see how it retains this momentum as we head into a New Year, and what kind of initiatives it’s got planned to continue to convert PS4 owners to its new console
